Venice doesn't hide its maintenance — or rather, it can't. The combination of salt air, rising damp, and the constant humidity of the lagoon means that render peels, plaster falls, and the layers of a building's history become visible whether anyone intended them to be or not. Here, white limewash has separated from the terracotta beneath it in a long ragged band along the base of a loggia arcade, the older surface asserting itself in a warm dusty rose. Above the waterline, the arches read as composed and deliberate: pale cream moldings in two rings, grey Istrian stone imposts, a pilaster between them carrying its small capital. Below, the building is simply coming apart and being left to do so, in the way that only cities with too much beauty and too little money fully understand.
