The neoclassical wave that swept through Venice in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries left behind facades like this one: render in a soft, even pink, window surrounds with spare molded cornices, and wrought iron balconettes whose acanthus-leaf scrollwork is the one concession to exuberance on an otherwise composed surface. The blue venetian blinds visible through the glazing are a small, entirely contemporary admission — the city's oldest light-management problem still being solved by the same basic logic. Three rows of windows are visible here, each pair framed identically, the shadow from each cornice falling at the same angle: a facade that has been thought about carefully and then left alone. Venice is full of buildings that made one good decision and had the discipline to stop there.
