Venice settles constantly — the timber piles beneath its foundations shift with the tides, the water table fluctuates with the seasons, and the city moves in ways that are too slow to feel but fast enough to crack plaster. Here a single hairline fracture runs from somewhere above the frame down to the corner of an iron-grilled window, a line so clean and deliberate it reads less like structural movement than like a drawing made directly on the salmon-pink wall. The grate below it is the practical Venice — security bars over a ground-floor window, their grid casting a ladder of shadow onto the white sill. The crack is the other Venice: the one that is quietly, perpetually, imperceptibly falling into the lagoon, and doing it beautifully.
