The Belgium Pavilion holds a quiet distinction in the Giardini: built in 1907, it was the first foreign national pavilion to be erected at the Venice Biennale, a founding claim that sits modestly behind a facade that has been remade several times since. What you see here belongs to the 1948 restoration by Venetian architect Virgilio Vallot, who stripped the earlier Art Deco ornament and reclad the entry block in a fine-grained mosaic render of soft celadon green — a surface that has aged, in the Venetian manner, into something handsomer than it began. A stone lintel bearing the pavilion's abbreviated name projects from the wall with a shadow as sharp as a serif. It is a building that carries its history lightly, having shed and regrown its skin enough times not to be precious about any one version of itself.
