Venice's gardens are small, walled, and full of surprises — and occasionally, in the shelter of a south-facing campo, a banana palm. The broad frond that enters the lower left corner of this frame is not a trick of the light or a misplaced import: the city's microclimate, moderated by the lagoon, is warm enough to sustain tropical plants in protected spots, an incongruity the Venetians take entirely in stride. Above it, a pair of dark teal shutters sits open against a white stucco wall, the inner glazing a deep blue, the wooden frame a warm sienna, two diagonal wires crossing the composition with the offhand precision of a ruled line. The plant and the window share the frame without acknowledgment of each other — two entirely different Venices, occupying the same wall.
