Venice's shutters are as functional as they are beautiful — the louvered persiane that fold out from nearly every window in the city are designed to manage the Adriatic summer heat, admitting air while blocking the direct sun that the lagoon bounces upward at double intensity. Here a pair swings wide, their teal paint a color somewhere between the canal water and the window frames of a hundred neighboring palazzi, revealing a sliver of blue and terracotta behind the inner glazing before the interior closes into black. A single utility wire cuts across the lower frame — the only concession to the contemporary in a composition that could otherwise belong to any century in the last four. Venice gives you the wire and dares you to mind it.
