The Neues Tempodrom carries an unusual history for a permanent building: it descends from a travelling circus tent that spent decades moving around West Berlin, becoming a beloved fixture of the city's alternative culture before the reunified city finally gave it a fixed home near Anhalter Bahnhof. The permanent structure honours that nomadic origin by retaining the tent as its formal logic — three white tensile canopies pulled taut over a steel armature, the whole assembly engineered to read as impermanent, as if it might be struck and moved on at any moment. Here the camera is pressed close to the membrane's underside, isolating two great sweeping ribs of white cladding as they arc from the lower corners toward the apex, their shadow edges cutting hard diagonal lines against the cobalt sky that fills the right half of the frame. The compression of the shot strips the building of its context entirely — no ground, no city, no horizon — leaving only curve and counter-curve, a geometry that could as easily be a sail as a roof. Berlin has always known how to make the temporary feel monumental.
