The Standard London occupies a former council building in King's Cross — a neighborhood that has spent the better part of two decades reinventing itself as a destination, and whose architecture reflects every stage of that ambition. The hotel's facade is the building's most considered gesture: a grid of recessed windows set into pale textured cladding, each opening softened by a rounded reveal that stops the composition just short of severity. Here the camera moves in close enough to dissolve any sense of street-level context, leaving only the repeating rhythm of voids and the raking shadows they cast — each arch throwing a hard crescent of darkness onto the panel below it, the pattern shifting slightly as the facade curves away to the left. The discipline of the grid and the warmth of that curve manage to coexist without either one winning, which is more than can be said for most of the neighborhood.
