The Standard London occupies a former Camden council building in King's Cross, a mid-century slab that the hotel's designers chose to celebrate rather than conceal — retaining and emphasizing its textured white aggregate facade as a deliberate counterpoint to the slick black volume that now sits atop it like a hat worn at a slight angle. The contrast between those two elements is the building's entire argument: postwar civic solidity below, glossy contemporary hospitality above, the junction between them marked by a dramatically curved black soffit that sweeps around the building's corner with more confidence than the meeting of two eras has any right to. Here that junction is the whole frame: the pale ribbed concrete fills the lower half, its arched window recesses casting hard shadows in strong light, while the overhanging black upper volume cuts across the top of the image, its polished underside curving away to the right against a flat periwinkle sky. The rounded corner of the lower building, just visible at the right edge, is the detail that earns it — a piece of original 1970s detailing that turns out to rhyme, quite neatly, with everything the designers added above it.
