The Standard London occupies a former council building in King's Cross, and whatever else you might say about the renovation, the architects did not play it safe: the facade wraps in curved precast concrete panels that bulge and bow outward in a rhythm closer to Art Deco ocean liner than anything the surrounding streets would have predicted. The cladding reads almost white in direct sun — a fine-aggregate texture that catches raking light and holds it, throwing the recessed window surrounds into deep shadow. Here, at the building's corner, two bays converge, the curves folding into each other while elliptical horizontal reveals cast arched shadows across the surface and thin gold frames glint at the edges of each deeply set window. The square crop isolates the junction precisely, turning what might read as mere ornament into something approaching geometry. London has a long tradition of civic buildings that forgot to be boring; this one remembered.
