The Standard London arrived in King's Cross in 2019 inside a former Camden council building — a 1970s structure that had spent decades as municipal office space before the hotel group stripped it back and leaned into rather than away from its brutalist bones. The building's most distinctive feature is its facade: a grid of precast concrete panels, each unit stamped with deep, rounded-cornered recesses that give the surface an almost typographic quality, like a giant keyboard or a page of embossed type. Here that grid fills the frame completely, cropped tight enough that the eye loses the building's edges and reads it as pure pattern — the raking light carving the recesses into hard black shadow so that each rounded channel reads as a solid form rather than a void. The repetition is metronomic, but the shadows keep shifting across the grid as the sun moves, which means the building's mood is never quite the same twice.
