The Standard London occupies a former Camden council building in King's Cross — a mid-century slab that the hotel's designers chose to celebrate rather than disguise, stripping it back to its raw board-marked concrete and leaning into the building's institutional bones as an aesthetic asset. The facade's defining move is its window surrounds: each opening is set into a deep reveal with softly rounded inner corners, a detail that reads as almost tender against the roughness of the aggregate concrete panel around it. Here, shot flat and tight in hard directional sunlight, those reveals become the whole subject — the raking light catches each hood above the windows and throws a hard diagonal shadow into the recess below, turning a grid of identical openings into something considerably less mechanical. A flash of warm brass trim at the window edges is the only concession to luxury; the rest is grey aggregate and shadow, doing all the work.
