Wood is not a material that usually reads as luminous. Treated and coated against the Seville climate, the Metropol Parasol's Baltic pine panels do something unexpected in strong backlight: they glow. Shot against the deep Andalusian blue, the oval modules catch the sun from behind, their faces silvering at the edges, the structural fixings appearing as small dark points in the gaps between each panel. The curvature of the cap is fully legible here — the surface bending in two directions simultaneously, the modules overlapping and layering as the form closes in on itself. The result reads as creature before it reads as construction: scales, perhaps, or the tight geometry of a pinecone — something that cohered through growth rather than design.
