The Metropol Parasol was designed to be experienced from below. Its purpose was shade — relief from the Seville sun in one of the city's most exposed public squares — and so the underside of the canopy is the building's real face, the surface turned toward the people it was made for. Shot from beneath, the diamond modules glow with backlit Andalusian light, the sun pushing through the pine panels and giving them a luminous, almost translucent quality. The conical node connectors — steel fixings holding the structural members at each junction — punctuate the grid in sharp silhouette. Below the canopy's scalloped edge, the Seville sky opens flat and uninterrupted: pure blue, the city's most persistent architectural material.
