The Metropol Parasol takes its name from the Spanish word for mushrooms — las setas — a nickname coined by the Sevillanos who watched the structure rise slowly and controversially above the Plaza de la Encarnación. Looking at the canopy's edge from below, the name earns a different kind of logic. The rounded module profiles repeat outward along the perimeter, overlapping and curving like scales, like the underside of a cap, like something that germinated rather than was assembled. Shot against the deep Andalusian blue, the structure reads here less as architecture and more as organism: white forms catching the sun, deep shadow held between them, the whole silhouette tracing a line that has no obvious precedent in the built environment.
