Vicens + Ramos clad the Parish Church of Santa Monica entirely in corten steel, a material more associated with infrastructure and industrial sculpture than sacred architecture — and that friction is precisely the point, a church that refuses to look like one while insisting on weight, permanence, and presence. The building's forms are angular and folded, its volumes torqued against one another as though caught mid-movement, the whole composition reading less like a container for worship than like something that arrived suddenly and decided to stay. Here the camera locks onto the junction where a massive corten overhang drives diagonally across the upper frame, its panelled surface streaked with deep rust and shadow, while below it a vertical lantern element — pale translucent glass ringed in oxidized steel, rust bleeding down its face — anchors the lower right against a saturated cobalt sky. The gap of open air between overhang and base is as considered as any of the solid forms: the building is as much about what it withholds as what it gives. In a city of rendered facades and terracotta rooftiles, Vicens + Ramos built something that weathers openly, aging into the argument it was always making.
