The Gate of Europe Towers were the first intentionally inclined skyscrapers in the world when they were completed in 1996, their twin forms leaning toward each other across the Paseo de la Castellana at a fifteen-degree angle — an engineering provocation dressed up as a civic gesture, marking the northern gateway into Madrid with something that looked, by the standards of the time, frankly impossible. The curtain wall that wraps each tower is dark enough to read as black against a clear sky, its gridded glass panels punctuated at irregular intervals by red structural mullions that cross the facade like a giant registration mark. Here, one tower fills the frame almost entirely: the leaning top edge cuts a hard diagonal across cobalt blue, the white corporate signage of its current tenant sitting flush against the uppermost panel, indifferent to the audacity of the architecture beneath it. A building designed to announce Europe now mostly announces real estate; Madrid remains unbothered.
