The Gate of Europe Towers were conceived as a symbolic threshold — twin inclined towers leaning toward each other across the Paseo de la Castellana, the first intentionally tilted skyscrapers in the world when they were completed in the early 1990s. Each tower terminates not in a blunt mechanical penthouse but in a tapered obelisk clad in marble panels, a classical gesture at the very top of an otherwise corporate glass-and-stone monolith. Here, the photograph isolates that apex entirely from its context: the chamfered marble point narrows to a knife edge, its two visible faces split cleanly between full sun and deep shadow, before the building gives way to a fluted cylindrical finial in gold that catches the light like something ecclesiastical. The finial's elliptical cap — a white disc hovering against pure cobalt — reads less like architecture and more like punctuation, a period placed firmly at the end of a very tall sentence. Madrid has always known how to dress a skyline; this is the city in its Sunday best.
