The Gate of Europe Towers were the first intentionally inclined skyscrapers in the world when they opened in 1996, each leaning toward the other at fifteen degrees over the Paseo de la Castellana — a gateway arch achieved not through a single spanning structure but through the sheer nerve of two towers held in counterbalanced tension. The engineering demanded a facade that could accommodate the tilt without reading as distorted: a tight curtain-wall grid of dark glass, its regularity interrupted only by red accent mullions that form a cross on each face, giving the surface a graphic identity legible from a distance. Here the photograph cuts to the apex of one tower, the inclined roofline slicing diagonally from upper left to lower right, the silver fascia compressing both faces of the corner into a single sharp edge against cobalt sky — and above the grid, in acid yellow, the word Bankia, a corporate tenant whose own history of collapse and bailout has become as much a part of Madrid's recent memory as the towers themselves. Architecture as symbol ages well; the tenants inside it, less reliably so.
