The labyrinth must be navigated, and in Muralla Roja, navigation means stairs. The building's external staircases connect its multiple levels — the terraces, the passages, the rooftop — weaving through the complex in sequences that Bofill modeled on the stepped streets of the North African medina. Shot in the Costa Blanca afternoon sun, this staircase becomes an exercise in alternating tone: the pink of each sunlit tread against the deep burgundy of the riser shadow below it, the pattern cascading from upper right to lower left in a rhythm so precise it reads almost as notation. Above it, a flat pink wall and a small chimney against the cobalt sky mark where the stairs end and the next level begins. The building's circulatory system, made graphic by the angle of the sun.
