Ricardo Bofill conceived Muralla Roja's color system as functional rather than decorative — each hue a navigational signal within the building's labyrinthine passages, a way of orienting residents through a complex that offered few other spatial cues. Shot from below at close range, that system stops performing its function and becomes something else. Two planes of warm color fill the frame: a soft rose pink on the left, catching the Costa Blanca sun at full intensity, and a deeper coral red to the right and below, the junction between them marked by a ledge and the deep shadow it casts. Blue appears three times — in two white-framed windows above, and in the vertical gap where the two walls part at center. Bofill drew on the North African medina. The camera finds a Rothko.
