The Mirador's cantilevering upper block is an engineering feat that the building wears lightly from the street — but seen from below, with the white concrete soffit stretching overhead and the orange columns of the sky plaza rising to meet it, the structural logic becomes visceral. Two trapezoidal orange piers catch the full Madrid sun against the deep shadow of the void behind them, their faceted faces angling toward the underside of the slab above. The vertical slat rail runs along the lower edge, the sky plaza's boundary marker, while a single thin fluorescent fixture on the soffit reminds you that this is, beneath its architectural ambition, a place where people actually live. MVRDV framed the Guadarrama Mountains through this opening; what the camera finds instead is the building holding itself up.
