The sky plaza's orange balcony rail is present twice in this frame: in physical fact at the right, where it borders the perforated metal screen of the orange neighborhood, and in projection on the left, where its shadow falls across the iridescent mosaic tile of the adjacent block in a long diagonal cascade. The mosaic surface — small silver-grey ceramic squares that catch the Madrid light with a wet, reflective quality — is the ideal canvas for this shadow play, breaking the dark bars into thousands of individual glints. Above, a second, smaller shadow reads like a window frame, the sky plaza's architecture projected onto the building's own skin. MVRDV designed the Mirador so that its neighborhoods would speak to each other across the void; here they do it in silhouette.
