César Pelli's Pacific Design Center arrived on Melrose Avenue in 1975 wearing a color that West Hollywood had no framework for: an all-over cobalt blue glass curtain wall so saturated and so large that the building immediately earned the nickname the Blue Whale. The complex grew in phases — a green building followed, then a red one — each volume clad in its own solid color and connected at grade, making the PDC less a single building than a color-field argument conducted in glass across several city blocks. Here the roofline of the Blue Whale dominates the frame, its grid of curtain-wall panels rising to a stepped profile punctuated by an arched barrel skylight, its pale silver surface curving up against a sky almost identical in hue to the building below it — while a corner of the green building edges in from the lower right, just enough to remind you there's more. The crop eliminates all ground-level context, reducing the composition to two shades of blue and one wedge of green, which turns out to be all the argument the building needs.
