The niche is one of vernacular architecture's most economical gestures — a hollow carved into a wall to hold a lamp, a vessel, or a small object of devotion, serving spatial and practical purposes simultaneously. In the Marrakech medina, they appear at doorways, inside passages, and embedded in street-facing walls, their white plaster surrounds standing out against the rose pink like small declarations. This one, with its rounded arch and plain white frame, catches the sun obliquely — a thin shadow from a lamp post above the frame crossing its white surface as a precise diagonal line. To the left, blue sky and a darker terracotta wall hold the corner. To the right, a small window opening. The composition is almost nothing. Almost nothing is exactly the right amount.
