The derb is the medina's smallest circulatory unit — the narrow alley that connects street to doorway, doorway to courtyard, neighborhood to neighborhood — its width calibrated to foot traffic and the passage of laden mules, its walls rising high enough to keep the sun out for most of the day. This frame looks down one toward its end: orange plaster on the left, vivid and freshly maintained; pale cream on the right and at the back, an older surface. An arch marks the terminus — a niche or passage cut into the far wall, its rounded form casting a bold teardrop shadow downward. Above, a sliver of blue sky. Below, the pale stone of the path. The medina reduced to its essential move: a corridor, an opening, and the light that finds its way through.
