Lisbon is shaped by two powerful architectural traditions: the Portuguese vernacular of painted stucco and terracotta, and the Moorish legacy of the centuries before the Christian reconquest of 1147. The scalloped arch just visible at the lower right — the very top of a doorway, barely present in the frame — is a quiet reference to the second tradition, the Moorish arch filtered through centuries of Portuguese building until it became simply part of the city's visual language. Above it, the terracotta wall is almost entirely consumed by a diagonal shadow — a massive geometric form in deep copper pressing against the lit salmon surface. The white on the left is sky, bleached by the same sun that is creating the darkness. The building reduced to three elements: the wall, the shadow, and the hint of a door.
