At its western end, the Palau de les Arts' feather roof comes to a point — the same long ribbed shell seen elsewhere along its 230-meter run, but here drawn down into a single curved blade. The diagonal ribs that fan out from the tip do the same work as the parallel battens further along: shading the structure from the Valencian sun while reading, from below, as the soft striations of an actual feather. A second, smaller shell sits low in the frame, its trencadís surface catching a hard edge of shadow, a quieter counterpoint to the roof's drama above. Calatrava designed the building's silhouette to change completely depending on where you stand beneath it; this is the angle where it looks most like it's about to take off.
