Everything the Palau de les Arts holds aloft comes down to this single point: a tapered white pylon, rising from the building's access walkway, that splits at its crown into the ribbed grey underside of the feather roof above. The geometry reads almost like a tuning fork, two faceted planes opening outward from a slender stem, with green-glazed windows catching light just where the structure widens. Calatrava is, by training, as much an engineer as an architect, and this is the moment where that training shows: the entire calculus of load and cantilever, made visible at the point it resolves. Against the deep black and white of the surrounding shells, the pylon reads less like a column than like a held breath, the building's full weight balanced on one quiet line.
