This is the silhouette that gave the Palau de les Arts its nickname — Valencians call it El Tiburón, the shark, and from directly below the comparison holds: two ribbed grey planes rise and meet at a sharp dorsal ridge, ventilated by a pair of dark slatted openings at the base. Calatrava's feather, as the steel-shell roof is officially known, runs 230 meters end to end and weighs some 3,000 tons, though none of that scale registers here, only geometry, pure and symmetrical as a fold in paper. Below, the building's white trencadís shells fall away to either side, one lit, one in shadow, holding the composition's only color against a hard blue sky. It's the closest the complex comes to heraldry: a single, instantly recognizable mark.
