Two structural languages meet at this edge of the Palau de les Arts: the smooth, fractured-white curve of a trencadís-clad shell rising into frame, and above it, the ribbed underside of the building's feather roof, its parallel battens raked back like a held breath before flight. A thin black stripe traces the roof's lip, the only hard edge in a composition built almost entirely of curves. Valencians nicknamed this building El Tiburón — the shark — for the way its profile cuts the skyline, and here, abstracted to two intersecting arcs against a deep Mediterranean blue, that menace softens into something closer to elegance. Calatrava designed almost nothing here to be load-bearing in the conventional sense; every curve does double duty as structure and gesture.
