Inside the Museu de les Ciències, five tree-shaped concrete piers do the structural work that walls would do in any ordinary building, branching upward until they resolve into the twenty-one arches that carry the aluminum roof. Here, caught from directly below, one pier forks into a clean V, its two white arms cradling a long herringbone panel of ribbed aluminum that channels light down the building's spine. The form narrows at a waist before flaring again into a second arch, glass glinting dark within its curve. Calatrava's reference point was the 19th-century exhibition greenhouse, but the vocabulary here is closer to anatomy: vertebra, rib cage, and the load-bearing logic of bone.
