Ricardo Legorreta completed the Camino Real Polanco in 1968 for the Mexico City Olympics, and from the beginning its architecture was a declaration: that Mexican modernism had no obligation to be quiet, neutral, or deferential to anything north of the border. Legorreta worked in the tradition of Luis Barragán — monolithic geometric forms, thick masonry walls, and color deployed not as decoration but as structure, as the thing itself. Here two of the hotel's signature elements occupy the frame in almost graphic collision: a hot-pink open lattice screen, its grid of protruding concrete members casting deep magenta shadows into each void, rises against a pale powder-blue sky while a flat-topped yellow volume juts in from the lower left, as blunt and confident as a punctuation mark. The lattice is cropped just short of its own edges on two sides, leaving the composition deliberately unresolved — as though the building is too large a fact to be fully contained.
