The Southbank Centre's different terrace levels are connected by external staircases — concrete stairs painted the same saturated yellow that marks all the complex's circulation spaces. The choice was deliberate: in a campus of this scale, where visitors might arrive from the Thames embankment below or from Waterloo Bridge above, color became a wayfinding system. The yellow says: this is how you get there. Photographed close and straight-on, the staircase loses its navigational function entirely. What remains is diagonal geometry — the treads and risers creating a series of receding angles, the black handrail cutting across the yellow in a single unbroken line, the shadow beneath each section absolute. The building tells you where to go. The photograph asks you to stop and look at how it does it.
