The Queen Elizabeth Hall was described as cold and oppressive when it opened in 1967. Opinion has shifted dramatically in the decades since — the building is now Grade II listed, its concrete appreciated for exactly the qualities that once made it controversial. This close view of the central elevation captures why. The pale board-marked concrete is formally resolved to the point of severity: the central panel flanked by diagonal supports that spread like wings, the composition bilateral and deliberate, the building presenting itself with the authority of a civic institution that has made up its mind. At the very center of the base, a single blue window. It is where the human scale enters. Everything else is monument.
