The Southbank Centre's architects understood that a building of this scale — concrete, massive, demanding — needed moments of warmth to sustain the people moving through it. Circulation spaces, stairwells, and passages painted in saturated yellow were part of that thinking: color as practical gesture, as psychological relief, as a way of marking movement within a complex that could otherwise feel disorienting. Shot close and cropped tight, this stairwell loses its functional identity almost entirely. What remains is the yellow surface — board-marked concrete still visible beneath the paint — and the diagonal shadow of the stair above, cutting cleanly across the composition. Pure geometry, purely functional in origin, and entirely removed from both by the frame.
