César Pelli's Pacific Design Center arrived on Melrose Avenue in 1975 as a building that refused to apologize for itself — a vast, curved shed clad entirely in blue glass that Angelenos immediately nicknamed the Blue Whale, equal parts baffled and besotted. The Red Building, added in 1988, is Pelli doubling down: the same monumental scale, the same curtain-wall logic, but now in a saturated crimson that reads less like architecture and more like a provocation aimed directly at the Hollywood Hills. Here the building's acute corner cuts diagonally across the frame, the curved face and the flat face meeting at a ridge sharp enough to split the sky, horizontal bands of red glass and dark spandrel panels stacking upward in perfect, almost aggressive rhythm. The composition crops everything away but that apex — no street, no context, no horizon — so the building exists only as geometry and color, which, in West Hollywood, is probably exactly how it wanted to be remembered.
