Of the five Unités d'Habitation Le Corbusier built, Corbusierhaus Berlin is the only one outside France — and the only one he had to design against another country's building regulations. German codes forced modifications: the building is narrower than its Marseille predecessor, the apartments reconfigured, the proportions adjusted to satisfy requirements Le Corbusier hadn't anticipated. And yet the essential idea survived the translation intact. What you see in this photograph is Le Corbusier's vision at its most tested — transported across a border, revised under constraint, and still unmistakably itself.
