Few architects were also serious painters, and fewer still let the two practices speak to each other as directly as Le Corbusier did. He painted under his birth name — Charles-Édouard Jeanneret — developing a Purist visual language of bold, flat color and clean geometric form that would migrate almost unchanged onto the facades of his buildings. At Corbusierhaus Berlin, the wall is the canvas: primary hues arranged with a painter's instinct for weight and balance, the whole composition hanging in the frame the way a painting does. Architecture as art practice — not metaphorically, but quite literally.
