Le Corbusier called the Unité d'Habitation a "vertical city" — and he meant it literally. Inside Corbusierhaus Berlin there were shops, a nursery, a hotel, a running track on the roof. The building was not meant to connect to the city around it; it was meant to replace the need for one. Shot close, that ambition condenses into something purely visual: a field of color panels so complete in themselves that the city outside — and the question of whether it was ever necessary — disappears entirely.
