Most windows at Central Saint Giles reflect sky. These don't — they reflect trees, the dark glass holding soft organic silhouettes within an otherwise rigidly geometric yellow facade. The juxtaposition is abrupt: the ceramic fins below are entirely systematic, each horizontal louver stepping down in precise increments and casting a precise shadow, the yellow surface as controlled and deliberate as architecture can be. And above, held in the dark glass, something unplanned — the shapes of trees pressing into the frame from entirely outside the building's own system. Renzo Piano designed every ceramic element. He did not design what would be reflected in the glass. This photograph catches both.
