Central Saint Giles presents itself differently depending on where you stand. Here, the building shows two faces simultaneously — yellow on the left, grey on the right, divided down the center of the frame as cleanly as a color swatch. Both ceramic fin systems are caught at a diagonal angle, both pulling light and shadow across their surfaces, but the effect is entirely different: the yellow warm and active, the grey cool and measured. What Piano understood — and what this photograph makes visible — is that restraint and exuberance can belong to the same building. The grey is not a concession. It's a counterweight, giving the yellow somewhere to be yellow against.
