The ceramic louvers at Central Saint Giles are not just cladding — they're a shadow-making system. Each horizontal fin projects far enough to cast a precise shadow on the one below it, and stacked in the density visible here, those shadows build into a stepped pattern that gives the facade a depth and texture that flat color alone could not achieve. The warm coral ceramic sets the overall tone; the deep blue of the windows cuts through it in vertical bands, the two colors in strict alternation across the frame. Renzo Piano understood repetition as a design tool — not as monotony but as rhythm. This photograph is that rhythm at its most insistent.
