Strip the color from Central Saint Giles and what remains is still extraordinary. The ceramic fin system — horizontal louvers stacked in precise layers between each window level, vertical mullions giving the grid its structure — is a sophisticated piece of design in its own right, entirely independent of the primary color palette that makes the building famous. Here, in grey, the system reveals itself: each fin casting a fine shadow on the one below, the layered profile creating depth across what could easily have been a flat surface. The blue glass provides the only color — and against the neutral ceramic it reads differently than it does against the red or yellow. More resolved. More architectural. The building thinking rather than shouting.
