Casa Vicens was Antoni Gaudí's first major commission, completed in 1885, and it announced from the outset that he had no intention of working within any established European tradition — the building drew instead on Moorish and Orientalist sources, its facades wrapped in hand-painted ceramic tiles that had no precedent in the Barcelona streetscape of the time. The marigold motif on those tiles was reportedly taken directly from flowers Gaudí found growing on the site, a detail that tells you everything about how he understood the relationship between ornament and place. Here the facade is compressed into near-abstraction: terracotta brackets with their scalloped undersides repeat across the frame in strong diagonal shadow, their russet mass thrown into sharp relief against the checkerboard field of teal, white, and floral yellow-green tile behind them. The shot is cropped so tightly that ground, sky, and context dissolve entirely, leaving only the rhythm of bracket and tile — architecture reduced to pattern, which is perhaps what Gaudí intended all along.
