Casa Vicens was Gaudí's first major commission, completed in 1885 for tile manufacturer Manuel Vicens i Montaner, and the building reads as a young architect making his argument all at once: Moorish geometry, Orientalist ornament, and an obsessive, all-over tiling that would have been unthinkable from anyone trained to treat decoration as something applied after the architecture was finished. Here the façade is caught at a corner where the building's visual logic is most exposed — teal and white checkerboard tiles wrap the wall in bold diamond checks, interrupted by horizontal bands of hand-painted sunflower maiolica, while raw coursed stone fills the re-entrant angle between them, unrendered and unapologetic. A pale yellow cast-iron shutter in a tight geometric lattice occupies the right third of the frame, its rigidly rectilinear pattern sitting in deliberate tension with the organic motifs of the tilework immediately beside it, the whole assembly held together by coral-red render at the reveals. Gaudí would spend the rest of his career abandoning the straight line entirely; here, you can still see him deciding whether to keep it.
