Casa Vicens was Gaudí's first major commission, completed in 1885 before he had fully shed the architectural conventions of his training, and it shows — not as hesitation, but as a building where Moorish, Mudejar, and Orientalist influences are being synthesized into something that had not existed before. The tile program is central to that argument: the facade is covered in hand-painted ceramic squares decorated with orange marigolds, interspersed with a checkerboard of solid teal and white that gives the whole surface an almost optical, textile quality. Here the photograph compresses that surface into near-abstraction — dark terracotta brackets and vertical fins cast deep shadow across the tile field, the geometry of the woodwork cutting the checkerboard into alternating columns of light and void. The marigold tiles survive the shadow intact, their orange and green registering warmly against the teal, a reminder that Gaudí always understood ornament as structure's equal, not its decoration. Barcelona has never been modest about what a house can aspire to be.
