The word "barbican" originally referred to the outer tower of a medieval castle — a watchtower, a defensive gateway, the first thing an enemy would encounter. It's a strange name for a residential arts complex, until you see it from this angle. The concrete tower rising against deep blue sky, its apertures cut dark and narrow into the aggregate surface, reads less like housing and more like a fortification — massive, self-contained, indifferent to the city around it. A yucca asserts itself in the lower right, a small tropical note that the building ignores entirely. The name has never felt more earned.
