The Barbican names itself simply — a single word in bold white type on a dark panel, no further explanation offered or needed. Shot at the moment a diagonal shadow cuts across the rough concrete beside it, the sign becomes less an identifier and more a compositional element: the smooth graphic surface of the panel against the aggregate texture of the wall, the designed letterform against the undesigned texture of the material. Two versions of the same institution in the same frame — the brand and the substance, caught in the same sharp light.
