The Barbican has never been universally loved — and that was never the point. Chamberlin, Powell and Bon designed a building that asked something of its residents: a willingness to live in a new kind of city, to navigate elevated walkways and shared spaces, to accept concrete as a domestic material. What they got in return was a community so fiercely attached to the place that it became its own argument for the architecture. Shot close, the politics of taste fall away. What remains is the texture itself — board-marked concrete, heavy and particular, a surface that remembers exactly how it was made.
